For kitesurfing to be enjoyable you need a steady ( not gusty) wind in the 15 to 25 knots range, which is exactly what Cabarete has.
When the tradewinds are present, expect the wind to start kicking in at around 1 in the afternoon, reach max strength at around 3. Average wind strength is around 18 knots, so for and average kiter that weighs 80 kilos (175 pounds) a kite size between 8 and 11 m2 will be most used.
Type of kiteboard depends on your riding preference . There are a few kiteboards shops in Cabarete to replace something if it gets broken. Starkites and Bic Carib center are your best places to go to. Although the schools also sell kites , boards and accessories.
Being a year-round destination, it’s ALWAYS a good time to come visit the Dominican Republic! Depending on what you’re looking to do on your active vacation there are better months to visit. Summertime is kite time; the temperatures are higher but the wind is consistent and conditions are great for kiting. Fall is a bit wetter, but that keeps the temperature down and the beaches are less crowded, making it a nice time for people looking to relaxing and rejuvenate. If you’re a surfer, fall is also the best conditions for surfing! Winter has the coolest, most comfortable temperatures, but that also means there are the most crowds, making it party season!
We recommend packing mostly light, summery clothing. Shorts, lots of bathing suits, light color tops and relaxed dresses. Hats are great for sun protection, and if you’re planning on kite boarding, bring a strap for your sunglasses and a rashguard to protect you from the midday sun. The vibe in town is pretty laid back, so there isn’t much sense in bringing fancy clothing or heels. Bring a reusable water bottle for you to fill from your 5-gallon water jug in your room to take with you. Light makeup or no makeup is best with the heat, and don’t forget to pack lots of SPF and mosquito repellent, so do your best to pack light and save on luggage space for souvenir shopping!
